This initiative is part of a major project co-ordinated by The Wildlife Trusts' South East Marine Programme. The project, entitled 'Marine biodiversity and aggregates in South East England', is supported by Natural England, through DEFRA's Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.

Inshore Fisheries Sustainability Pilot

The UK Inshore Fisheries Sustainability (IFS) Pilot, has examined marine fisheries in the area managed by the Sussex Sea Fisheries Committee (SSFC) against the Marine Stewardship Council environmental standard for well-managed fisheries. UKIFSP project page

Habitat Classification Using Video and Acoustic Techniques

The inshore fisheries off Sussex

An exciting new report has been published by the Sussex SFC in which, for the first time, details on the extent and nature of the inshore fisheries off the Sussex coast are described. It is a comprehensive assesment of the spatial extent of an inshore fishery. This is an important development as it demonstrates the significance of the Sussex fisheries and is of use for spatial planning.

Cuttlefish egg receptor trials

A preliminary investigation into the feasibility of laying artificial substrates as receptors for cuttlefish eggs. In an effort to improve the egg survival of eggs that are sometimes removed in the fishery, fishermen from Eastbourne (with the support of the local Sea Fisheries Committee) have been trialling 'egg receptors'.

Lobster Escape Hatches in Selsey

SUSSEX fishermen are spearheading a new initiative to conserve valuable shellfish stocks by installing hatches on their lobster pots to enable under-sized animals to escape.
