Habitat mapping using video and acoustic techniques

A major research report was presented to Cefas today (2nd June 2008) which provided an insight into the seabed off the Sussex coast. Using video and acoustic information the Sussex Sea Fisheries Committee were able to describe the diversity of the seas off the Sussex coast; information which is essential in the management of inshore waters. The research was funded by the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund Partnership Grants Scheme, a fund, administered by The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science.

Nearly 300 video camera tows were undertaken off the Sussex coast and many hours of video was collected and classified according to habitat type. Information on the acoustic diversity of the seabed was then used to categorise the seabed to produce a habitat map of the seafloor.
