Eastbourne fishermen investigate ways to protect cuttlefish eggs

In the spring fishermen along the Sussex coast fish for cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), this mollusc is much prized and exported as far afield as Korea. The inshore fishery, where only small under 14 meter boats are allowed to operate, uses fish traps to catch the cuttlefish as they come inshore to bread. Cuttlefish trap fisheries are very selective and they can allow a chance for the cuttlefish to breed, they are therefore, potentially, the most selective method of catching the 'fish'.

In an effort to improve the egg survival eggs that are sometimes removed in the fishery fishermen from Eastbourne, with the support of the local Sea Fisheries Committee, have been trialing 'egg receptors'. A full copy of the report can be found here
